On Sunday, February 10th, I went to the Lunar New Year celebrations with some friends in the China Town and Trafalgar Sqaure areas of the city. The city's celebrations are the largest outside Asia. This year it was the year of the pig, as according to Chinese mythology, twelve animals were asked to swim across a river and their winning position determined the order of the years they were to be celebrated. The animals that raced across the river were the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.
We started the day by wondering around the city and then went to the China Town area, where we went into traditional supermarkets and bought some popular Asian drinks and sweets. Afterwards it was time to watch a traditional display of Chinese culture, where we listened to traditional New Year's songs. We then wandered around the city where we eventually reached Leicester Square before it was time to head back home.
